West Virginia as a destination for skiing can be traced back to 1950 when sports enthusiasts started developing Canaan Valley for skiing. There are now many different areas for downhill skiing and snowboarding, like the Winterplace Ski Resort, Snowshoe Mountain, Timberline, Elk River Touring Center, and Alpine Lake Resort. There are also thousands of miles of cross-country skiing throughout the state.
